Hexagon Quilt

Date made: late 19th century

Place made: Laxey

Description: A quilt with a lattice effect of alternating stripes of hexagons in an elongated diamond pattern with plain Turkey red cotton panels. The hexagonal diamond shapes are predominantly made from floral, sprig and striped dress fabrics with a single hexagon of Turkey red in the centre of each diamond.

The quilt is backed with white cotton and is hand-quilted with white cotton thread in an ornate pattern. The quilting is an unusually complicated pattern for a Manx quilt, quilted as it is in a series of stripes so as to match the patchwork pattern on the front. The hexagonal and diamond panels are quilted the same whilst a floral quilting pattern is used on the bands of Turkey red cotton. The quilt contains a thick, white cotton wool filling.

This quilt belonged to the donor's mother, Mrs Kewley, and was originally from the donor's grandmother, Mrs Smailes, a hotel owner in Laxey in 1881.
