Cotton Striped Quilt

Date made: 1887

Maker: Kaighin, Christian

Description: A cotton patchwork quilt with alternate stripes of blue (fine fern design) and pink and white candy stripes with a star design. The patchwork top is worn in places revealing an earlier, older striped patchwork made from red and black spotted cotton and a white and pink sprig pattern.

The quilt is backed with a white cotton sheet and is hand-quilted in a zig-zag pattern with white cotton thread. It is also machine-quilted with straight lines of stitching and does not contain any filling.

This patchwork quilt was made either by Christian Kaighin or her mother at Rhenass, German in 1887 for Christian's brother, Richard Hugh Kaighin. The quilt was used by Hugh Kaighin at Kerrowglass, Michael and was used in the 1980s-90s to cover vehicles in a garage during winter.
