Isle of Man Steam Packet Company deckchair

Description: This deckchair dates from the 1920s or 1930s. It would have been carried aboard one of the vessels of the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company, plying its trade between Douglas and the ports of Liverpool and Fleetwood, and would probably have been used by one of the thousands of holiday makers who made the crossing to the Isle of Man each summer.
The folding wooden chair has been painted white and is robustly upholstered in thick hard wearing fabric similar to carpet.
The IOMSPco fleet in the 1920s and 1930s epitomised the elegant style of those decades. Like small ocean liners, vessels like the 'Lady of Mann' or 'Mona's Queen' were fitted out with polished teak and brass, and given a fresh coat of gleaming white paint each summer. A voyage on one of these ships meant that a week in the Isle of Man was more than an average seaside holiday.
