English-style Pieced Quilt
Date made: late 19th century
Maker: Kaighin, Christian
Description: An English-style pieced patchwork quilt with a pattern of 7cm squares. The Turkey red diamond shape is made by surrounding a 35 cm cross-shaped area of fabric with four squares. These patchwork blocks are bordered by two different cotton prints, one white with a brown sprig pattern, the other a pink, green, red and white floral print. When repeated, the patchwork blocks form a lattice effect.
The quilt is backed with a white cotton sheet and is hand-quilted in a zig-zag pattern. It is edged with two straight lines of hand stitching in white cotton thread, acting as binding. The quilt does not contain any filling.
The patchwork quilt was made by Christian Kaighin of Rhenass, German in the 1880s-90s.
