Figure

Date made: 1948

Artist: Day, Maurice

Description: Maurice Day (1929-2007) was an artist and a former tutor at the Isle of Man College. His life and works were circumscribed by two events. One was the loss of his legs in an accident, the other, which occurred around the same time, was the release of pictures of the Nazi extermination camps which had just been liberated by the allies. Day’s sculptures are like no other. He reused scrap material, and whilst he worked on a very small scale his themes are large, for example human suffering. His interest in small creatures is also reflected in his work. This item formed part of an exhibition of Maurice’s work in 1999.

This sculpture, made of white alabaster, depicts a female figure. The sculpture is mounted on a wood base which is painted black with a gold coloured square adhered to the surface. It is one of Day's first pieces of carving.
