Woollen Appliquéd Quilt

Date made: 20th century

Description: An appliquéd woollen framed medallion patchwork panel sewn onto a large red damask tablecloth, leaving a wide boder of red damask tablecloth around the central panel. The patchwork is a geometric framed pattern with a central square with one large and four smaller diamonds appliquéd onto it using feather stitch. The central square is surounded by eight alternating white and blue diamonds and a broad square band of green and orange striped woollen fabric with appliquéd floral patterns in each corner. The four corners of the overall panel are decorated with white rectangles and red diamonds (possibly playing card motifs). The dominant colours of the patchwork are blue and grey, highlighted by the soft orange, contrasting greatly with the deep red of the tablecloth.

The design of the patchwork panel may mean that it was made and used as a tablecloth, possibly for a card table hence the motifs.
