Record entitled 'Isle of Man 1979 1000 years 1000 welcomes'

Date made: 1979

Description: This record (actually a 'flexidisc') was given away free with the Isle of Man Holiday Book in 1979. It used the 1979 Millenium of Tynwald celebrations to promote the Island as a tourist destination. It features extracts from 'The Wonderful World of Man' and songs by The Mannin Folk.

The record is pressed from gold coloured rubber, with the title and speed (33rpm) on the label.

Such flexidiscs were often given away free with magazines in the 1970s and 1980s. Unlike vinyl records they would not easily be damaged and the often lurid colours attracted attention. The 1000th anniversary of Tynwald was widely celebrated in the Isle of Man and much commemorative material was produced. The Mannin Folk were one of the most significant Manx bands of the 1970s, performing a mix of traditional folk music and their own compositions inspired by Manx themes.
