Cotton Framed Medallion Quilt

Date made: c.1920

Maker: Member of Corkill Family

Description: A framed medallion patchwork quilt with a central framed pattern surrounded by rectangular pieces of fabric. The central panel comprises a bordered square with, at each corner, a smaller red square with white spots set as a diamond. The quilt contains a mixture of shirt fabrics (brushed cotton) and fine cotton sheeting, mainly striped or plain. The dominant colours of the quilt are white, yellow, pale green, pale blue and pink.

The quilt is backed with white cotton sheeting patched in several places with cotton or damask. The quilt is predominantly un-quilted though some areas are machine-quilted in straight lines using white cotton thread. The edges of the quilt are bound with one line of machine stitching also in white cotton thread. The quilt does not contain any filling.

The quilt was made by Mrs Corkhill of Agneash between 1910 and 1920 and was given to the donor by Mrs Corkhill's daughter.
