350cc AJS motorcycle ridden by Canon E.H. Stenning

Date made: 1922

Maker: A.J.Stevens & Co

Description: This motorcycle once belonged to Canon E.H. Stenning, a master at King William's College, local historian, author and official of the Tourist Trophy motorcycle races.

The machine is painted in the standard black and gold livery of AJS, with the logo of the firm on the petrol tank. The seat is made of leather, with an old repair visible.

Stenning was known to generations of schoolboys at King William's College where he was a housemaster. He would often recruit the boys to give him a push start on his motorcycle. His passion was for racing, and he can often be seen in early photographs of the TT start line, a rather incongruous tall figure in clerical collar.
