Woollen Wholecloth Quilt

Date made: 19th century

Description: A reversible coarse woollen wholecloth quilt. The green or blue top is patched with pieces of lighter green satin, including one large patch near the centre of quilt and one at the edge. This forms a patchwork strip with several other woollen fabrics added when the quilt was at some stage repaired.

The quilt is backed mainly with pieces of unbleached woollen fabric and some of a black and white heavy woollen tweed and cream coloured brocade. The quilt is hand-quilted in a diamond or trellis pattern with red woollen thread. The quilt does not contain any wadding.
