Unfinished Patchwork Cushion Cover

Description: An unfinished patchwork cushion cover comprising English-style pieced patchwork.
A geometric pattern of diamonds in the `tumbling blocks` pattern with a border, to made a square cushion cover panel. It is unbacked, but the papers and tacking stitches have been removed. Overall the colours of the panel are salmon pinks, blacks, browns and a variety of blues. There are mauve squares in the corners with borders made of green and striped red fabric, these are possibly the decorative ribbons of dresses. Most of the patchwork is clean and undamaged but the salmon pink fabrics are stained and the ribbon panels are damaged.
The patchwork panel was produced by the donor's grandmother, Mrs Quayle (nee Harrison) of Kerrin Hill, near Foxdale and was described as a 'box of diamonds' pattern when donated in 1937. The high quality of the fabrics suggests a relatively wealthy background.
