Woollen Wholecloth Quilt
Date made: mid 19th century
Description: A woollen wholecloth quilt with a red flannel top sewn from several pieces of fabric. The quilt is backed with several pieces of plain unbleached flannel repaired in various places.
The quilt is hand-quilted with red woollen thread in a zig-zag pattern. A variety of fabrics from plain cotton to purple print have been used as wadding.
The material used to make the quilt was woven about 1860 in Cregneash by William Taubman. He used thread spun by his wife using wool from his own flock of sheep at Spanish Head. The quilt was donated to the Manx Museum in exchange for new blankets.
