Cotton Framed Medallion Quilt

Date made: c.1860

Description: A geometric patchwork quilt with with framed medallion design. The central square contains four diamonds. This is surrounded by concentric borders made up of squares and rectangles. The quilt also contains a series of green cotton squares arranged as diamonds. The printed fabrics have blue, brown, green, red, orange, black and lilac patterns set against a white background. Several have the same patterns printed in different colours suggesting that the maker had access to a dressmaker's sample book.

The quilt is backed with white cotton fabric and does not contain any wadding. The patchwork is hand-quilted in a zig-zag pattern using white cotton thread.

The quilt was made around 1860 by the aunt of Mrs Kennaugh, Douglas, who donated the quilt to the Manx Museum.
