Portrait of Mrs John Quayle

Date made: 1826

Description: Mrs Margaret Quayle (1799-1879) of Rushen House, Castletown, painted by local portraitist Henry Barber of Derbyhaven in 1826. We have a number of his enigmatic society portraits in the art collection. Born to a wealthy Manx family Margaret Frissel Tellet was married to John Quayle (1793-1857), a Member of the House of Keys. They were prominent 19th century society figures on the Island, and she became well known for her charitable and philanthropic works. Margaret was aged 27 at the time of the painting, and her family described it as being a very striking likeness.
