Kirk Michael Road (from Conk Crogher Chapel)

Date made: c.1850

Description: "Walked to Ramsey via St Johns, Kirk Michael and Ballaugh to see more of the scenery. I several times sat down by the road side to note in my memorandum book any observation or idea which I thought worth transcribing to you; for I had the road to myself nearly all the way." (Miss Weeton: Journal of a Governess 1811-1825, M 08236)

Miss Georgina Gore Currie was the niece of Horatio Powys, Bishop of Sodor and Man from 1854 to 1877. Georgina stayed with the Bishop’s family at their residence, Bishopscourt, north of Kirk Michael. During her time on the Isle of Man, Georgina sketched and painted many Manx scenes including Bishopscourt and its gardens.
