Peel Castle

Date made: n.d.

Artist: unknown artist

Description: “Peel is the most unforgettable place, romantic for its castle, caves (which alas, I did not see), its rocky coast, and green mountains and pebbly stream, with large beautiful pool beside the ivied bridge.” (Dorothy Wordsworth, Journal of a Tour in the Isle of Man, 11th July 1828, M 10561)

This mounted lithographic view is part of Sarah Jametta Crigan's sketchbook. The lithograph is cut from T. Ashe's sketchbook, 1825 (the series engraved by Haghe) annotated in the same hand and ink as signature on cover (1825). Sarah Jametta was the daughter of Claudius Crigan (Bishop of Sodor and Man 1784-1813) and author of 'Memoirs of Major Charles Crigan' (her brother) published in 1864.
