Northern Oval Brooch Assemblage Brooch
Date made: Viking: 800-1265, AD 900-950
Description: A copper alloy cast oval double-shelled brooch decorated with stylised animal motifs and twisted silver wire. Five open-work bosses along with four other bosses (now lost) have linking grooves, some of which still contain silver wire.
One of two brooches found with collection ID Number 2021-0007/0001, though this one is slightly better moulded (both type P51). An area of iron accretion is attached to the back surface, the remains of a pin with the imprint of some textile. Fragmentary remains of textile were recovered during the conservation process. Some remains of the pin and collars of decorative bosses were recovered. Two small holes are visible where the two shells would have been bound together or possibly where thread/wire would have been strung between the two brooches.
Dot and ring decoration around the bottom edge is similar to that on the buckle (collection ID Number 2021-0007/0003) and strap-end (collection ID Number 2021-0007/0004).
