Broadway (Douglas)

Description: Broadway links upper Douglas with Douglas Bay on the east coast of the Isle of Man (NGR 23826 47640). Brown's Popular Guide to the Isle of Man of 1876 says, "...we re-enter Derby Road, and passing downward find ourselves in the short road known as Broadway, at the bottom of which are the Iron Pier and the Promenade..." (p.42) Brown's Popular Guide to the Isle of Man of 1900 says, " ...we reach a broad, open thoroughfare, leading by several fine new streets of handsome houses into the northern part of the upper town. This is Broadway, and at its lower end, is the Central Hotel, a large building of red brick, of very striking proportions." (p.61) and "At Broadway...the cable tramway, which traverses the Upper Town, meets the shore line; and beyond this point, we enter upon a part of Douglas which, until a few years ago, was a half-rural suburb sparsely occupied by villa and residential houses. Of late years, however, it has become very popular with summer visitors, particularly with family parties and others of mature age and quiet habits, who naturally wish to get near the sea during their stay; and in consequence it has undergone a very striking change in its standing and appearance." (p. 72)
