Victoria Street (Douglas)

Description: Victoria Street runs through south Douglas on the east of the Isle of Man (NGR 23823 47545). Brown's Guide to the Isle of Man of 1900 says, "...we may turn up Victoria Street - the modern street of first class, well-stocked shops and hotels, formed a little over twenty years ago to make a better entrance from the newly built Victoria Pier into the Upper Town then being created for the accommodation of summer visitors..." (p.56) and "This street, Victoria Street, became form the first the main thoroughfare of the town, and its chief business street...This had been foreseen and intended, and it was accordingly laid out as a business street, its shops and store rooms being large and capacious. These modern shops, being in the line of the main traffic, and being better fitted for business premises, were occupied by the leading tradesmen of the town, who lavishly stocked them with goods of the best qualities and of the newest styles, and who conducted their businesses on the latest and most approved lines." (p.77)
