New Bond Street (Douglas)

Description: New Bond Street, now demolished, was near the quay in Douglas on the east of the Isle of Man (NGR 23822 47528). Brown's Guide to the Isle of Man of 1900 says, "On the western side of Parade Street is another opening into that part of the Old Town lying between the North Quay and Victoria Street - New Bond Street, which, with many windings, ends in the Market Place, behind the Old Chapel of St. Matthews." (p.79). Brown's Popular Guide to the Isle of Man of 1879 says, "...the stranger need not be afraid of taking a tour with us, in his strongest boots, mind, through the old town of Douglas, not forgetting that "kidney boulders" are more plentiful than kidney potatoes, and ragged children more numerous than baker's loaves. Starting from the Market Place we pass down the North Quay into Fairy Ground; then along New Bond Street to Stowell's Lane." (p.43).
