Tynwald Hill
Description: Tynwald Hill is located in the village of St John's in the Isle of Man (NGR 228167 480962). Brown's Popular Guide to the Isle of Man, 2nd Edition of 1876 says, "200 yards beyond the church is the grass-covered mound called 'Tynwald Hill', in Manx called Cronk-y-Keillown, i.e., St John's Church Hill. It is one of the most interesting antiquities in the Island - interesting from the fact that here, for hundreds of years, the Manx people have annually gathered in thousands for the purpose of hearing read, and promulgated, the laws which have during the previous year been passed by the Legislature of the Island. The annual ceremony of promulgation takes place on the 5th of July. A fair is held on the plain adjoining the hill, and adds materially to the bustle. From early in the morning hundreds of vehicles may be seen coming along the roads leading to St John's, and the railway trains are crowded to excess. The highway from Douglas is especially animated on the occasion."
